Blaster – Mining Explosives Specialist

About the role
The Blaster is responsible for preparing, executing and completing all tasks related to mining blasts. This includes ensuring compliance with statutory, legal and BME SHERQ requirements, managing blast accessories, and guaranteeing safety before, during and after each blast.
Key responsibilities
- Draw the correct accessories from the magazine according to the blast design.
- Complete vehicle inspections and pre‑use checklists for accessory transport.
- Carry out all pre‑blast preparations such as priming, pumping, stemming, timing design and SHERQ checks.
- Approve the blast after confirming area safety and completion of all pre‑blast procedures.
- Declare the area safe post‑blast and handle required administration and reporting.
- Supervise Blasting Assistants and mixer‑placer truck operators.
- Manage unacceptable behaviour, escalating serious offences to the Foreman.
- Allocate housekeeping tasks to the blasting team and ensure timely completion.
- Perform any additional ad‑hoc duties within required timeframes.
Required profile
- Grade 12 with Mathematics.
- Valid Mining Blasting Ticket (mandatory).
- Magazine Master certificate.
- Certificate of Conduct (Police).
- Code B Driver’s Licence.
- At least 3 years demonstrated blasting/assistance experience in a mining or explosive environment.
- Experience with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Email) is advantageous.
