Medical Underwriter (OMAO)

About the role

Old Mutual is hiring a Medical Underwriter (OMAO) in Windhoek. The role reviews risk submissions from clients, agents and referrals and underwrites insurance requests within the underwriting manual and authority limits, applying underwriting and risk-selection techniques to new and renewal risks.

Key responsibilities

• Review new business and renewal proposals, check that underwriting and rating information is complete, provide price quotations and refer unusual or complex cases to senior colleagues.
• Carry out research and analysis to support the development, validation and improvement of automated underwriting processes and systems.
• Monitor risk parameters, report deviations and work within established risk management systems.
• Investigate standard incidents using regulatory and compliance processes, advise on complex problems and develop knowledge of policies, procedures and regulatory codes.
• Support external communications, recommend procedures and precedents to managers, and prepare complex documents and data summaries for special reports.
• Handle intermediary enquiries, advise on requirements and impairments, and capture underwriting information accurately in the product administration system.
• Provide written communication to customers and distribution channels, gather information on financial conditions, risk exposures and economic trends, and uphold the image of Underwriting and Old Mutual.

Required profile

• Namibian citizenship.
• Matric with Biology/Life Sciences and Mathematics or Biology/Life Sciences and Accounting.
• Degree or diploma (medically aligned, BSc or BCom, minimum NQF level 7).
• Well-developed written and spoken English; an additional African language is advantageous.
• Life insurance product and process knowledge is beneficial.
• Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, work flexibly and overtime, and deal with a variety of customers by telephone.

Required skills

• Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Telephony skills are advantageous.
• Old Mutual product knowledge and system experience are advantageous.
