Depot Operator: Operations and Product Quality

About the role

This role covers the safe and efficient operation of fuel depot facilities, including receiving petroleum products from vessels, maintaining product quality standards, monitoring storage and transfer operations, and ensuring compliance with operational, safety, environmental and regulatory requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure the correct products and quantities are received and stored safely, with accurate stock records and coordination of vessel discharge operations.
• Operate pumps, valves, manifolds and loading arms, monitor transfer rates, pressures, temperatures and tank levels, and keep operational, shift and inventory logs.
• Perform routine inspections of tanks, pipelines and equipment, complete stock counts and tank dipping on schedule, and carry out minor plant maintenance.
• Take product samples during vessel receipts and transfers, run product tests, verify compliance with specifications and customer standards, and track corrective actions for non-conforming products.
• Carry out first-line troubleshooting, support preventive maintenance, and keep equipment manuals and calibration records up to date.
• Follow HSSE policies, use PPE correctly, report hazards and incidents, and contribute to spill response and a zero-harm safety culture.

Required profile

• NQF Level 6 Diploma in Chemistry, or an N3 technical qualification in Chemical, Mechanical, Process, Petroleum, Maritime Operations or a related field preferred.
• 3-5 years' experience in petroleum storage, terminal, refinery, marine or fuel depot operations; vessel receipt and fuel transfer experience preferred.
• Experience in petroleum product quality control and sampling.
• Shift work, including nights, weekends and public holidays.

Required skills

• Knowledge of ISO 9001 and ISO 17025 is an added advantage.
• Knowledge of quality management systems, operating procedures, test methods and calibration requirements.
