Technical Specialist - Roads & Highway

About the role

SMEC is hiring a Technical Specialist for its Roads & Highway division in Namibia, reporting to the Section Manager. The specialist delivers independent professional engineering services on multidisciplinary projects, supporting their planning, design, delivery and close-out, and also supports project and contract administration, quality assurance and client engagement.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver engineering designs, drawings, models and technical solutions using Autodesk Civil 3D, CAD and BIM workflows, and prepare accurate technical reports.
• Review and take professional responsibility for the work of engineers and technicians, and supervise inspections of constructed works, proposing remedial actions where needed.
• Maintain quality assurance processes throughout the project life cycle.
• Support project budgets, resourcing and workload planning, and assist with Works Authorisations, Variation Orders and claims assessments, including contractor claim recommendations and rulings.
• Verify sub-consultant invoices and compliance with contractual deliverables.
• Assign, coordinate and supervise engineers, technicians and small project teams, manage sub-consultants and mentor junior staff.
• Communicate with clients, present technical work internally and externally, draft technical parts of bids and proposals, identify additional work opportunities and support marketing initiatives.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited institution.
• Registered with the Engineering Council of Namibia (ECN) as a Professional Engineer.
• At least 10 years of engineering experience in a consulting post with professional registration.
• Experience supervising engineers, technicians and site activities.

Required skills

• Demonstrable competence in Autodesk Civil 3D and CAD for engineering design and documentation.
• Intermediate knowledge of BIM principles and workflows.
• Sound understanding of project management, commercial and contractual principles.
