Senior Officer: Biodiversity & Land Use

About the role

Swakop Uranium is looking for a Senior Officer to coordinate, protect and enhance the company's environment and its surroundings in terms of biodiversity and biophysical monitoring, and to raise awareness among stakeholders. The position is based in Swakopmund, Namibia, on a permanent basis.

Key responsibilities

• Draft, oversee and implement the Company Biodiversity Action Plan(s) to monitor biodiversity indicators and highlight mitigation measures.
• Oversee restoration and rehabilitation trails in line with the Mine Closure Plan.
• Coordinate biodiversity assessment, planning, implementation and capacity building, including habitat management.
• Incorporate biodiversity into each phase of the mining life cycle to assess impacts and reduce risks.
• Implement a mine closure rehabilitation strategy and secure resources for test trials.
• Provide specialist guidance for scoping and impact assessments and land clearances, collecting, analysing and reporting biological data.
• Establish and oversee the GIS database and integrate GIS into the environment management system.
• Analyse data rigorously, prepare detailed reports and enforce legislative compliance.
• Run environmental control and audit systems, and coordinate biodiversity and biophysical monitoring programmes with regular quality checks.
• Investigate major environmental incidents, analyse trends, apply standards and report to government bodies where applicable.
• Review and update environmental procedures regularly.

Required profile

• BSc/BTech/BA degree in Environment Management, Biodiversity or Natural Sciences; an Honours degree or equivalent is an added advantage.
• 5 years of relevant experience, including 2 years at a supervisory level.
• Valid Code 08 driver's licence; off-road experience is preferable.
