Environmental Officer

About the role

NamPower is looking for an Environmental Officer in Windhoek. The incumbent ensures that NamPower complies with national and international environmental legislation and international best practice. The role covers site inspections, environmental management plans, permits and environmental awareness.

Key responsibilities

• Identify and mitigate environmental risks in line with policies, regulations and pollution control requirements.
• Inspect NamPower sites to ensure compliance with Environmental Management Plans (EMPs) and legal requirements, and prepare inspection reports and recommendations.
• Monitor non-conformances and ensure corrective and preventive actions are implemented.
• Collect data for developing and reviewing EMPs and scoping reports, and compile, review and monitor EMP implementation.
• Obtain and manage environmental permits and approvals, and manage ECCs including uploads, renewals, validity tracking and database updates.
• Promote environmental awareness through training, inductions and awareness sessions, and maintain environmental statistics, records and reports.
• Assist in investigating environmental incidents, complaints and non-compliance, and support ISO 14001 implementation.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Management or Environmental Science (NQF L07).
• Three years of experience in environmental management.
• Experience in Environmental Impact Assessment is an added advantage.
• Valid Code B driver's licence.

Required skills

• Advanced computer literacy in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
• Working knowledge of SAP.
• Knowledge of corporate operations, the regulatory environment, the utility industry and production-measurement activities.
• Competence in risk management, especially in the power industry, and experience coordinating third-party audits.
