Research Intern – Biodiversity & Invasive Species

About the role

The Research Intern will support the BES‑Net II project in Namibia by generating geospatial evidence on invasive cacti control measures and comparing the effectiveness of past mechanical and biological interventions. The role involves close collaboration with the Biodiversity Research Centre at NUST and the National Botanical Research Institute.

Key responsibilities

• Compile and digitise existing information on invasive cacti control measures across Windhoek and other priority sites.
• Develop a structured geospatial database with locations, species, control methods, dates, responsible institutions and current site conditions.
• Conduct stakeholder consultations, maintain contact records and perform field verification visits using GIS tools.
• Analyse the effectiveness of historical mechanical versus biological control approaches and document lessons learned for future management.
• Prepare monthly progress updates, contribute to maps, datasets and science‑to‑policy briefs, and support dissemination of findings.

Required profile

• Enrolled in or recently graduated from a postgraduate or final‑year undergraduate programme in Natural Sciences, Ecology, Environmental Science, Biodiversity Conservation or related field.
• Strong interest in biodiversity, invasive species management and evidence‑based policy.

Required skills

• Proficiency with GIS software, particularly QGIS.
• Experience in building and managing geospatial databases.
• Ability to conduct field surveys, collect georeferenced data and perform spatial analysis.
• Good written communication for reporting and knowledge products.
