Safety Engineer - Uranium Mining Project
IOTA GROUP · Swakopmund
Job description
About the role
IOTA Group supports its clients on major international projects in the energy, nuclear, mining, infrastructure and industrial sectors. For a major uranium mining project in Namibia, it is looking for an experienced Safety Engineer based between Swakopmund and the Trekkopje site, reporting to the Engineering Manager.
Key responsibilities
- Manage the project's safety engineering (process, chemical, radiological, fire and occupational safety in design), overseeing the safety studies carried out by the EPCM/EPC contractors so that the design is inherently safe and compliant with regulations and ORANO Group standards.
- Define the safety design basis, safety philosophies and applicable codes, and ensure they are implemented in the design.
- Organize and facilitate HAZID, HAZOP, SIL and other safety studies, and track actions until closure.
- Perform or review risk assessments (consequence modelling, fire and explosion, hazardous areas, radiological exposure, chemical storage) and define safety-critical elements.
- Review engineering deliverables such as layouts, P&IDs, fire protection, escape routes and emergency systems for compliance with safety requirements.
- Contribute to the safety and licensing documents required by Namibian authorities and to the emergency response plan.
- Manage the safety configuration of the project in coordination with other disciplines, under the management of the engineering manager (change management process).
- Support pre-start-up safety reviews, safety verification during construction and commissioning, and the safety assessment of engineering changes.
- Report safety engineering progress, issues and risks to the HSE Manager and Engineering Manager, and contribute to lessons learned and safety culture.
Required profile
- Engineering degree in Chemical, Process, Safety or Mechanical Engineering.
- More than 10 years of proven experience in safety or process safety engineering on mining, mineral processing, chemical, oil & gas or nuclear projects (EPC/EPCM).
- Professional proficiency in French and English; ability to work in an international and multicultural environment.
- Valid driver's license.
- HAZOP leadership or functional safety certification, and experience with safety licensing documents, are a plus.
Required skills
- Strong knowledge of process safety, risk assessment and consequence modelling tools (e.g. PHAST), fire and explosion protection, hazardous areas and international codes and standards (IEC 61511, IEC 60079, NFPA).
- Namibian regulation (including radiation protection); experience with nuclear or radiologically controlled facilities is a bonus.
The assignment is based in Swakopmund and the Trekkopje site, Namibia, and could run until 31 December 2027. Candidates apply with a detailed CV in English.
