Junior Data Scientist

About the role

Old Mutual is looking for a Junior Data Scientist to join its People Data & Analytics team. You will work with large, multi‑source datasets to uncover insights that shape business strategy and improve performance across the organisation.

Key responsibilities

• Collect, clean, and validate data from multiple sources to ensure accuracy.
• Analyse large datasets to identify patterns, trends and correlations.
• Develop and implement predictive models using statistical and machine‑learning techniques.
• Apply classification, regression, clustering and forecasting algorithms.
• Create visualisations, dashboards and automated reports using Power BI and Excel.
• Collaborate with business stakeholders to translate data into actionable insights.
• Support data‑governance, quality and compliance initiatives aligned with DMP/DCAM principles.
• Automate data pipelines, perform data profiling, transformation and feature engineering.
• Monitor model performance and continuously improve models.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics or related field (Honours degree is a plus).
• 1–3+ years of experience in data science, preferably in financial services or insurance.
• Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail and ability to communicate technical insights to non‑technical audiences.
• Collaborative mindset and business acumen to understand and influence business processes.

Required skills

• Programming languages: Python, R, TypeScript, C, C++, Ballerina, C# (.NET), Node.js.
• Databases and query tools: Microsoft SQL (T‑SQL), SQL Server, DAX.
• Data‑science tools: Jupyter/Notebooks, VS Code, Power BI, Power Platform, Microsoft Excel (advanced).
• Big‑data frameworks: Hadoop.
• Machine‑learning concepts: supervised & unsupervised learning, predictive modelling, statistical analysis, data mining, ETL/ELT processes.
