Data Scientist

About the role

Join the Group Data and Analytics team at FNB to design, build and optimise quantitative analytical methodologies that support business strategy. You will work with minimal guidance to develop advanced mathematical models, translate insights into actionable recommendations, and help drive data‑driven decision making across the organisation.

Key responsibilities

• Build and implement innovative analytical solutions to solve complex business problems and inform strategy.
• Validate, interpret and create reports and presentations for data analytics, management and stakeholders.
• Translate analytical findings into practical recommendations that support strategic decision‑making.
• Collaborate with business stakeholders to define metrics, delivery plans and performance tracking.
• Continuously test, update and document analytics models to ensure accuracy, relevance and robust governance.
• Assist in production‑isation of analytics within the FirstRand architecture and work with cross‑functional teams.
• Communicate complex findings through clear visualisations for non‑technical audiences.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Econometrics, Physics or Actuarial Science.
• 3–5 years of experience in data analytics within a banking or regulated environment.
• Familiarity with banking regulation, risk frameworks and compliance requirements.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills with ability to work collaboratively.

Required skills

• Advanced proficiency in SAS, SQL, Python or R.
• Advanced use of data‑visualisation tools such as PowerBI or Tableau.
