Laboratory Manager

About the role

ALS is hiring a Laboratory Manager for its Kombat Site in Namibia. The role ensures laboratory activities are optimized and the laboratory runs efficiently, and sits within the senior site management team, providing assurance that site quality, safety and productivity management systems are fit for purpose.

Key responsibilities

• Drive compliance with ALS Health and Safety Foundation Standards, company policies and local legislation
• Ensure timely, quality results are reported to clients and minimize amended work orders due to error
• Check and approve outgoing analytical data and ensure QPs, QWIs, SOPs and client procedures are followed
• Advise on inventory, consumables and stock levels, and advise on capital equipment purchases
• Maintain analytical instruments and equipment to minimize breakdowns and downtime
• Maximize productivity through better work practices and advise the Line Manager and senior management on improvements, staffing, training and new technology
• Use resources efficiently, reduce wastage and foster a good work ethic among staff
• Keep staff trained and developed, remain client focused and optimize turnaround time
• Oversee QC functions at the site and follow ALS HR best practices when managing staff

Required profile

• Degree in Chemistry, Science, Geology or Engineering from a recognized university, or in-depth knowledge of chemistry or geology
• 5 years of laboratory experience, including at least 3 years in a supervisory or managerial role with a multinational geochemical testing or mining/exploration company
• Knowledge of Quality Management and ISO 17025 accreditation processes
• Hands-on knowledge of operating spectroscopic instruments such as AAS, ICP-OES and elemental analyzers (Leco)
• Strong written and spoken English, and good interpersonal skills in a multicultural environment
• Sound technical knowledge of geochemical analytical techniques and excellent computer skills with Microsoft Office
• Eligible to work in Namibia (citizen, permanent resident or valid working visa)
